What Does "God-Fearing" Actually Mean?—Intimacy, Training Wheels, and Holy Reverence

Intimacy in the Waiting

Jesus wants deep, personal intimacy with each and every one of us. Yet, we so easily get caught up in frantic striving and worrying about the future, forgetting the simple, life-changing command: "Be still, and know that I am God."

When Jesus gives you a promise, it will happen—always in His perfect time, not our own. Sometimes the waiting period is about much more than preparing financially. Sometimes He uses the waiting room to strip away everything that gets in the way, building who we are so we can enter into a much deeper level of intimacy with Him. We do not need to strive.

1. Rejecting Earthly Competition and Condemnation

The world constantly tells us lies. It tells us we have to compete with our neighbors, or that if we don't immediately evangelize every single person we meet, we are wicked.

We need to remember the staggering power of prayer. Sometimes, trying to force human conversations prematurely can be spiritually dangerous or misaligned; other times, He prompts us to speak to those very people when we are truly ready. The truth is, He knows exactly when we are ready—we do not.

And He can use infinite frequencies to guide us: He speaks through a song on the radio, a street sign, a license plate, a repeating series of numbers, and—just as He did in Scripture—even a burning bush or a donkey. God is never limited.

2. Earth as Training Wheels for Eternity

The life we lead on earth is, in many ways, one with training wheels. Earth is our training ground for heaven.

First, we enter into covenant with Him. As we learn who He is through His living Word, we begin to genuinely fall in love with Him.

Many people misunderstand Scripture, believing that "fearing the Lord" means trembling in terror of divine retribution, falling victim to the exhausting trap of trying to achieve human perfection by works. But the law already proved we could never achieve perfection on our own.

3. The True Meaning of the Fear of the Lord

The biblical fear of the Lord is something profoundly beautiful. It is not paralyzing dread; it is loving Him so deeply that you grieve the thought of hurting Him.

Just in the same way that you fear hurting a cherished child, a parent, a close friend, or a spouse out of deep affection, you fear wounding the One who loves you so immensely that He paid your eternal debt. He did this so we could live as if we had never sinned—both here on earth and eternally in heaven.

Walk in that holy reverence, release your striving, and rest securely in the love of your Father today.

Reflection for Today

Releasing Striving in the Waiting: Are you trusting His timing in the waiting room, or are you exhausting yourself with frantic human striving?

Listening Across Frequencies: Are you looking for God's guidance in everyday moments, trusting that He speaks through infinite ways?

Redefining the Fear of the Lord: Do you view God as an angry taskmaster waiting to punish you, or are you motivated by a holy, beautiful reverence that grieves hurting One who loves you?

A Prayer for Today

Father, thank you for the absolute Truth of your Word and the beautiful reality of your love. Forgive me for striving, worrying about the future, and misunderstanding what it means to fear your name. Teach me that the fear of the Lord is a deep, sacred love—a reverence so profound that I cherish your heart above all else. Thank you for paying my debt, for treating this earth as a training ground for eternity, and for inviting me into intimate covenant with you. In Jesus' name, amen.
