The Living Word: Ingesting the Words of God
God's words are written on scrolls, but they are more than ink on parchment; they are alive, powerful, always accomplishing their purpose, and expressing God's heart. They aren't simply vehicles of communication, but vessels of His Spirit, meaning to embrace His words is to embrace Him.
When God speaks, He wants His words to become part of who we are. We are commanded to ingest and digest them, becoming one with them rather than letting them go in one ear and out the other.
If we treat God's words simply as commands, suggestions, or external instructions, they will affect only our behavior. However, if we see them as food, they will change our nature, because "you are what you eat," and eating His words means becoming one with Him.
God never intended for His words to remain external where we would follow them without a heart equipped to do so. His desire is for His words to sink so deeply into our spirit that we can fulfill them simply by acting naturally, giving us a changed nature and putting His Spirit within us so His voice finds a home in our heart.
father, thank you that your word is alive and full of power. teach me to receive it not as cold instruction but as daily bread. let it sink past my mind and into my spirit until it changes my very nature. write your voice on my heart so that obedience becomes natural, and let your Spirit find a permanent home in me. in Jesus' name, amen.
