The Deep Work: The Battle For The Keys
"Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?" — Ephesians 4:9
What happened between Jesus' last breath on the cross and the moment the stone rolled away? Scripture reveals that Jesus went on an offensive raid into the realm of the dead.
Ephesians 4:9 tells us that Jesus "descended first into the lower parts of the earth." He went down into the territory of death and hell, not as a victim, but as a conquering King.
Why did He go? To take back the keys.
In the Bible, keys represent authority, ownership, and the right to permit or lock away. When Adam fell, he effectively handed the spiritual dominion of the earth over to Satan, giving the enemy the power of death. But during those three days in the depths, Jesus confronted the prince of darkness on his own turf.
Jesus broke the gates of brass, shattered the bars of iron (Psalm 107:16), and physically stripped the devil of the keys of hell and death.
He did this for one reason: To permanently remove the enemy's power to hold you captive. Because Jesus holds the keys, hell cannot hold a believer, death has lost its sting, and the enemy no longer has the authority to lock you into a lifestyle of addiction, torment, or generational curses. The cell door is unlocked; Jesus has the keys.
In recovery and deliverance, you must realize that the enemy is a defeated squatter. He has no legal right to your mind, your body, or your life because Jesus took his keys away.
When the enemy tries to tell you that you are trapped, that you will never break free from an addiction, or that your past defines you, he is lying. He is acting like a jailer who has already lost his keys.
Your discipleship walk is about enforcing the legal reality of what Jesus already did. You don't have to beg God to defeat the devil for you; Jesus already disarmed him, put him to open shame, and took his authority. Your job is to stand on The Truth of the finished work of the cross and command the enemy to leave the property that now belongs exclusively to Jesus.
Anchor your faith in the absolute victory of Christ through these scriptures:
Hebrews 2:14 — "Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;"
1 Corinthians 15:55, 57 — "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? ... But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
1 John 3:8 — "For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil."
Lord God Almighty, I praise You for the finished work of the cross. I thank You that the legal debt of my past, my sins, and my failures was completely blotted out and nailed to the cross. Jesus, I thank You that You descended into the depths, broke the power of death, and took the keys of hell and death away from the devil. Because You hold the keys, the enemy has no legal right to lock me in bondage anymore. I declare that the chains of addiction, fear, and shame are broken by the blood of the Lamb. I choose to walk out of the prison house and step into the absolute freedom You purchased for me. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
