Spirit, Soul, And Body
"Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." — 1 Thessalonians 5:23
God did not create you as a one-dimensional being. Scripture reveals that you are a three-part being: you are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body.
When you cry out to Jesus for salvation and deliverance, a profound shift happens across these three dimensions:
The Spirit: This is your innermost being—the part of you designed to commune with God. The moment you are born again, your spirit is instantly recreated. It is filled with the Holy Spirit, made completely righteous, and sealed (Ephesians 1:13). Your spirit does not need recovery; it has been made brand new.
The Body: This is your physical casing, your house. It possesses physical senses and carries the physical neural pathways and cravings formed during years of addiction or coping.
The Soul: This is the bridge between your perfect spirit and your physical body. Your soul consists of your mind, your emotions, and your will.
The soul is where the wreckage of the past resides. While your spirit is instantly saved, your soul must be daily renewed and restored.
Understanding this three-part design completely changes how you view your daily walk in recovery.
Many believers fall into despair because, after coming to Christ, they still experience intrusive thoughts, intense emotions, or physical cravings. They think, "If I'm really delivered, why am I still struggling?"
The answer lies in understanding the difference between your spirit and your soul. The enemy can no longer possess a born-again believer's spirit—it belongs entirely to God. However, the enemy can still wage war against your soul (your mind and emotions) and exploit your body (your physical cravings) if you let him.
Deliverance clears out the enemy's legal strongholds in your soul. Discipleship is the daily training process where your newly alive spirit, powered by the Holy Spirit and the Word, takes dominion over your unrenewed mind and tells your physical body how to behave. You are not fighting for victory; you are enforcing the victory of Jesus from your spirit outward.
Study these scriptures today to understand how to feed your spirit and renew your soul:
Hebrews 4:12 – "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."
Romans 12:2 – "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."
Galatians 5:16 – "I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh."
Heavenly Father, I thank You that You have gracefully and wonderfully made me. Lord, I praise You that my spirit has been redeemed and sealed by the Holy Spirit. Today, I surrender my soul—my mind, my feelings, and my choices—to the authority of The Truth. Wash my mind with The Truth. Quiet my turbulent emotions. Keep my physical body in subjection to Your Spirit. I pray that my whole spirit, soul, and body will be preserved blameless by Your grace. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
