The Authority You Forgot You Had
"Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you."
— Luke 10:19
There is a moment in Luke 10 where Jesus turns to seventy ordinary disciples—fishermen, tax collectors, mothers—and hands them the keys to a kingdom they did not build. They hadn't graduated from theological seminaries, and they weren't religious leaders. They were regular people who simply chose to follow the Master.
Yet, Jesus looked at them and transferred cosmic, spiritual dominion straight into their hands.
The enemy's greatest strategy in recovery and deliverance is to keep you in a state of spiritual amnesia. He wants you to forget who you are and what has been placed inside you. He wants you to view yourself as a helpless victim of a disease, a slave to an ancestral pattern, or a broken soul constantly on the defensive.
But when you examine the precise words Jesus used, the entire power dynamic of your life changes.
In the original Greek text, Jesus uses two completely different words for "power" in this single verse:
First, He says, "I give unto you exousia (translated here as power)..." Exousia means legal authority, delegation, and the rightful power to command. It is the authority of a police officer who can step into traffic and stop a massive semi-truck simply by raising a hand. The officer doesn't stop the truck with physical strength; they stop it because they represent the entire weight of the government behind them.
Then, He says, "...over all the dunamis (translated as the power) of the enemy." Dunamis means raw brute force or ability.
Jesus did not say the enemy has no force. Satan has rage, temptations, and demonic power. But Jesus declared that your delegated legal authority (exousia) completely overrides the enemy's brute force (dunamis).
When you are walking out deliverance discipleship, you must stop begging God to do what He has already authorized you to do.
Notice where Jesus says the serpents and scorpions belong: under your feet.
"Behold, I give unto you power to tread..." Treading is an action. It requires you to step down, move forward, and enforce dominion. Many believers are waiting around for the enemy to randomly decide to leave them alone. He won't. Demonic spirits of addiction, lust, torment, and fear are legalistic squatters. They will occupy the territory of your mind and body until you stand up, open your mouth, and use the delegated authority of Jesus Christ to evict them.
You do not fight in your own name, your own tracking record, or your own goodness. You fight in the Name that is above every single name. When you command a spirit to go in the Name of Jesus, that spirit is not obeying you; it is obeying the King who stripped them of their keys in the depths of hell. It is time to stop acting like a prisoner and start operating like an ambassador of the Kingdom.
Awaken to the real authority given to you by digesting these scriptures:
Luke 10:20 – "Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven."
Matthew 28:18-19 – "And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, 'All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore...'"
Mark 16:17 – "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils..."
Lord God Almighty, I repent for the times I have lived like a victim, forgetting the immense cost Jesus paid to give me authority. I thank You that my name is written in heaven and that I have been sealed by the Holy Spirit. Right now, I step into the delegated authority of Jesus Christ. I declare that the enemy has no legal right to terrorize my mind, manipulate my emotions, or trap my body in addiction. By the blood of the Lamb and the power of Your Word, I command every demonic assignment against my life to be broken. I choose to tread on the traps of the enemy today, knowing that nothing shall by any means hurt me. In the mighty and matchless name of Jesus, Amen.
