The Shepherd Goes Ahead—Following His Steps Day by Day

The Good Shepherd Leads

Yesterday, we looked at the sobering warning of Matthew 13:15 regarding a hardened heart, and the vital importance of keeping our spiritual perception soft, moldable, and fully alive to the Holy Spirit.

When we guard our hearts and keep our spiritual antenna clean, how does the Lord lead us forward? He leads us as the Good Shepherd.

In John 10:4, Jesus tells us a profound truth about His leadership:

John 10:4

“And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.”

He Goes Ahead

The Shepherd goes ahead of His flock. Along with guarding our hearts against callousness and distraction, we as believers are called to follow His instructions implicitly, step by step.

1. Ordered Steps, Not a Five-Year Plan

This is why Scripture says He will order our steps, not necessarily lay out our entire day ahead or show us the next five years of our lives.

As we walk through life, we realize we are given one day at a time. None of us can live a month without rest, and none of us can carry tomorrow's burdens today. We have to take it day by day.

When we try to map out our future in our own strength, anxiety creeps in because we were never designed to hold the weight of tomorrow. But when we remember that we have a living covenant—that we have invited Him into our hearts—we can surrender the roadmap entirely to Him.

If you are reading this and have never made that surrender, you don't even have to say it out loud. In the quiet of your soul, you simply say:

“Jesus, I want to know you. Please come into my heart. I want to follow you, because you know what is best for me, and as Lord of all, you know the absolute best possible life for me.”

2. The Ripple Effect of Kingdom Love

When we follow His steps daily, we get to participate in the miraculous ways He transforms human lives.

Imagine a homeless woman living on the streets, disheveled and worn down by the world, who crosses paths with a believer carrying a genuine fire for Jesus. Over the course of a month, they run into each other a few times. He simply offers to pray with her, and she says yes.

Fast forward a little while: they stop to chat again, and with tears in her eyes, she shares that because she said yes to Jesus, her entire life has flipped. She has a safe home, a steady job, and a deep, burning desire to seek Him more every single day.

The joy that floods that man's heart is a joy like no other—and the joy in her heart is unspeakable. It is the breathtaking experience of sharing the love we were created to know: the only love we will ever truly need.

3. Letting Go and Letting God

Through absolute faithfulness to Jesus, the supernatural fruit overflows into every human relationship we hold. We become truly faithful to our husbands, our wives, our children, our parents, and our neighbors.

And the incredible truth is: He does it all.

We don't have to strive, manipulate, or force outcomes. All we have to do is let go and let God.

Reflection for Today

Taking It One Step at a Time: Are you exhausting yourself trying to figure out the next five years, or are you trusting the Shepherd to order your steps today?

Following His Voice: Do you recognize the Shepherd going ahead of you, or are you stubbornly lagging behind in your own self-will?

Surrendering to His Lead: Have you truly let go of your self-reliance, letting Him anchor your heart in His peace and transform your life from the inside out?

Pray with us

“Father, thank you for the absolute Truth of your Word and the comforting promise that our Shepherd goes ahead of us. Forgive me for stressing over tomorrow and trying to map out my life in my own strength. Teach me to follow your instructions implicitly, taking it one ordered step at a time. Thank you for your covenant, for your life-changing grace, and for the privilege of sharing your love with a broken world. I let go of my control today, and I let you lead. In Jesus' name, amen.”
