The Old Covenant into the New Covenant

The Ark and God's Raw Holiness

In the time when David ruled Israel as king, the governing covenant was defined by the Ten Commandments, and the Ark of the Covenant served as the physical, localized manifestation of God's presence and raw holiness on earth.

All who approached or touched it without explicit permission or proper consecration perished instantly. This demonstrated God's undeniable, raw power alongside His uncompromised character.

We see this same holy standard in Deuteronomy and Exodus: when the newly freed Israelites built the golden calf idol in the wilderness, God's justice burned against their rebellion. Yet when Moses interceded, God showed mercy under a precise framework—some faced the consequences of their rebellion, while others were rescued.

This history reveals how God parents us, disciplines us, loves us, and remains utterly unwavering in His goodness. Because He exists completely outside of time, He already knew every human choice, yet He gave them free will. When unrepentant wickedness remained entrenched, judgment fell, because wickedness cannot coexist beside absolute holiness.

1. From a Single Ark to Multiplied Authority

When Jesus died, resurrected, and ascended, everything shifted. The raw, holy power of the presence of God was no longer confined to a box behind a temple curtain; instead, it was multiplied and poured out through the Holy Spirit.

Every saved believer now carries that presence—we function as "mini arks" housing the Spirit of God. This fulfills the authority Jesus spoke of: having the power to trample on serpents (representing deception, cunning, and the direct legacy of the serpent in Eden) and scorpions (representing subtle, venomous, and hidden tormenting attacks from the enemy).

2. Immune to the Noise of Society

What does this mean for our daily lives? It means that when we fix our eyes squarely on Jesus, we step into the peace of heaven.

That peace acts as an inner spiritual immunity, protecting us from the rot and chaotic pull of wickedness that infests modern society through the unseen principalities of darkness. We are anchored in a superior covenant built on better promises.

3. The Law Still Stands, Written on Our Hearts

The New Covenant did not erase the Law. Jesus said He came not to abolish the Law but to fulfill it. God's holy standard has never changed—His Law still stands, because it is a reflection of His perfect character.

What changed is how we are brought into alignment with it. Instead of leaving us to strive in our own strength, Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit to program and refine us over time. Day by day, He writes the Law on our hearts, reshaping our desires until obedience flows from love rather than fear.

This is the beauty of sanctification: the Holy Spirit is preparing us to exist under God's perfect Law in heaven, where holiness and peace dwell together completely. And as He refines us, we begin to feel that same peace of heaven right here on earth.

Reflection for Today

Carrying His Presence: Do you live each day aware that you are a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit—a "mini ark" carrying the presence of God?

Walking in Authority: Where is the enemy using deception (serpents) or hidden torment (scorpions) against you, and how can you exercise the authority Jesus has given you?

Fixing Your Eyes: What noise of society is pulling your gaze away from Jesus, and how can you return to the peace of heaven today?

Pray with us

Father, thank you for your unwavering holiness and your perfect love. Thank you, Jesus, for tearing the veil and pouring out your presence through the Holy Spirit. Help me honor the dwelling place you have made in me. Teach me to walk in the authority you have given me to trample serpents and scorpions, and keep my eyes fixed on you so your peace guards me from the chaos of this world. Anchor me in your better covenant. In Jesus' name, amen.
