The General's Orders in Spiritual Warfare

As believers, we are called to share the truth with unbelievers and stand firm in what we know. While we cannot control the outcome of our witness, we can participate in making it effective. When we see someone struggling, our new nature in Christ moves us with compassion to minister to them. But the enemy knows this heart, and he frequently sets a trap.

We think we are doing the right thing by rushing in, only to be rebuked, cursed, or mocked, and that potential doorway for ministry seems to close—sometimes permanently. Why does this happen? Because we charged forward in our own strength.

Spiritual ministry is not casual conversation; it is frontline combat. It is precisely like trench warfare on the front lines of World War I. If a soldier charges the enemy lines alone with a single rifle, refusing to consult the commanding officer, what happens? Ninety-nine percent of the time, they are killed or severely wounded. They might get a lucky shot off, but if they don’t know where to aim, lack the army of angels on assignment, and most importantly, lack the direct orders and permission of the General, they will get bitten by the enemy—and it will hurt.

There is a vital reason Jesus commands us to let Him order our steps. If we ask Him and wait in preparation, He will either give us a clear “yes” with specific instructions—because He created that person and knows exactly how to navigate the enemy’s tactics—or He will say “no,” which in itself is an act of divine protection and a call to intercede silently.

The enemy’s trap is to bait us into moving outside of God’s timing, get us rebuked and attacked, and then drown us in discouragement. If you have done this and experienced the pain of rejection, do not stay down.

The enemy wants you to believe that because the door is closed to you, it is closed forever. But remember: no door is closed to God. Romans 8:28 reminds us: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Even our missteps can be woven into His plan, and even if we cannot reopen that door personally, we can always pray and ask Him to intercede.

The key is total alignment with our Commander, which means obedience in every decision, great or small. Stop charging the enemy’s trenches in your own power. Ask for the General’s strategy. Trust that He has plans to prosper you and not to harm you, giving you a future and a hope. When you move on His orders, you move with the full backing of Heaven.
