The Foundation of Readiness
In early recovery, there is often a desperate temptation to fill the void left by addiction with a human connection. We look for a partner to provide the validation, comfort, and purpose that we haven’t yet learned to receive from the Father.
But anything—or anyone—you try to place in a “God-sized hole” will eventually crumble under the weight of your expectations.
Relationships in early recovery are often a trap. If you have not yet walked through the Steps and allowed God to heal the deep fractures in your soul, you are not choosing a partner; you are choosing a crutch.
Two people who are not whole cannot truly choose each other, because they are both functioning out of need rather than freedom. If you have not yet found your completeness in Christ, you are not yet the person God created you to be, and you cannot yet recognize the person He has prepared for you.
Consider the life of David. When he was anointed to be king, he did not immediately ascend to the throne. He went through years of wilderness, trial, and training. During that time, he was not focused on marriage or the validation of others; he was focused on being shaped into the man God needed him to be. He was being prepared to lead a nation.
If you bypass your “wilderness”—the time set aside for the Steps and your personal transformation—you bypass the very thing that qualifies you for the future God has in mind. You cannot lead, build, or love effectively if you have not first been built by the Architect.
If you do not know the heart of God, it is impossible to know His will for your life, especially in the area of companionship. Without an intimate, daily relationship with Him, you are essentially gambling with your future, hoping that your human intuition will guide you.
Your first year of recovery is a sacred, non-negotiable window of time. It is designed for you to be alone with the Father, to let Him perform the surgery on your heart, and to let Him transform your nature. When you are fully healed and aligned with His will, He will bring the person meant to build with you—not someone to fill your emptiness, but someone who shares your calling.
The “God-Sized” Audit: Are you using people to distract you from the work God wants to do inside you?
The Davidic Season: Can you see your current period of singleness not as a “lack,” but as a season of being shaped and prepared by the King?
The Exchange: Repent for trying to rush into a relationship to find relief. Surrender your future to the Father, and trust Him to provide the right partner in His perfect time.
Father, i thank you for the gift of this season of healing. forgive me for the pride and impatience that made me want to rush into a relationship to fill the void in my heart. i recognize that i cannot choose a partner wisely if i am not yet whole in you. i choose today to stay in the ‘wilderness’ with you, to let you shape me, build me, and transform my nature. i trust that you know exactly who i need to build with, and i trust your timing more than my own desires. keep my heart guarded, my mind focused, and my soul anchored in your love. make me the person you created me to be. amen.
