Hope Does Not Disappoint—God's Love Poured Into Our Hearts
"And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us."
The world offers many kinds of hope—hope in money, relationships, achievements, or our own strength. These can disappoint us because they are temporary. The hope we have in Jesus is different. It rests on His finished work at the cross and on the faithfulness of a Father who keeps every promise.
When we place our hope in Him, we will not be put to shame. Even when we cannot yet see the answer, His promises stand.
Paul does not say that God's love was measured out sparingly. He says it has been poured out into our hearts. Through the Holy Spirit living within us, the love of the Father fills the places once marked by shame, addiction, fear, and loneliness.
In recovery and deliverance, we learn that we cannot heal ourselves by striving. We receive His love, and that love begins to restore and reprogram us from the inside out.
The verses before Romans 5:5 remind us that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance produces character, and character produces hope. The difficult seasons are not wasted. Jesus uses them to build in us a steady trust that rests in Him.
As November begins, give Him your past, your waiting, and your hopes for the season ahead. His mercies are new every morning.
Anchoring Hope: Where have I been placing my hope in something temporary instead of in Jesus?
Receiving His Love: Am I allowing the Holy Spirit to pour God's love into the wounded places of my heart?
Trusting the Process: How might Jesus be using a present difficulty to build perseverance, character, and hope in me?
Father, thank you that my hope in you will never put me to shame. Thank you for pouring your love into my heart through the Holy Spirit. Fill every wounded and empty place with your love, and free me from anything that keeps me from trusting you. Use every season of my life to build perseverance, character, and hope in me. Align my heart with Jesus today and help me to walk in your peace. In Jesus' name, amen.
